“Learn Nothing Day”
Happy “Learn Nothing Day“!
Learn nothing day is an idea by Sandra Dodd. With unschooling meaning learning all the time, from every day life, that means unschoolers don’t get weekend or holiday breaks. Sandra joked that we should have one day a year that we take a break and learn nothing. July 24th which is her birthday (and mine) is that day.
The joke is, unschooling families try really hard not to learn a single new thing for a day…and quickly find that that that is impossible.
A lot of doubters claim that without forcing kids to sit in school and work through a curriculum, they’ll simply “learn nothing”. This is so far from the truth. Kids are curious. Kids are natural learners. Especially without school making learning a chore, there’s nothing you can do to stop a kid from learning.
Maybe if you locked a kid in solitary confinement, but then again they would be alone with their thoughts and who knows what they’ll learn from doing that!
Here is a great podcast from Amy Child’s at Unschooling Life Podcast about Learn Nothing Day as well.
